Problem
The problem is that a standard-configured Acrobat Distiller cannot generate a TrimBox from a QuarkXPress PostScript file. This is because Quark has changed the PostScript code of the crop marks, and therefore the Idiom Recognition included in Distiller for creating the TrimBox no longer works.
Solution
There are free and paid options: You can use the PDF export from QuarkXPress. The integrated JAWS PDF Creator Library is used to generate the PostScript file. This PostScript can be interpreted by Distiller with regard to the crop marks. Steps to the solution:
Close all documents in QXP.
In QXP go to File > Preferences > Application > PDF and check Create PostScript file for later distilling, then click OK.
Open the QXP file and then choose File > Export > Layout as PDF.
In the Save dialog, select the PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-1a settings and define the necessary options. These mainly include bleed and crop marks. Then click OK.
The resulting PS file simply needs to be distilled.
Subsequent correction (alternative)
In some cases, it is possible to perform a subsequent correction of the TrimBox and BleedBox based on the visually placed crop marks.
The full version of Acrobat (not the Reader) provides the Preflight tool, which allows for checks and corrections. You can find the tool under: Advanced > Print Production > Preflight [up to and including Acrobat 9.x] Tools > Print Production > Preflight [from Acrobat X onward].
In the Preflight dialog, select the Profiles tab. Go to PDF Fixups and apply the fix Derive page geometry from crop marks by double-clicking the name of the fix with the document open. Then save the corrected document.
