Description
Annotations inside the trim or bleed area of a page may cause unpredictable print output. They are not allowed in PDF/X files.
The message “Comment within page” indicates that a PDF comment object—an Annot (annotation)—is located within the page geometry. In other words, at least one comment object is visible within the printable area, e.g., inside the TrimBox (final size) or BleedBox (bleed area).
In the PDF specification, comments are defined as interactive objects (notes, highlights, stamps, etc.). They are generally not intended for final printing but for corrections, comments, or collaboration. In print-ready PDF/X files, no annotations should be present in the content area, especially none that would appear in the print.
Common Causes
Notes or marks were accidentally added in the layout program and were not removed during PDF export.
Imported PDF files or external content contain embedded comments.
Comments were not placed outside the print-relevant areas.
Comments were added in Adobe Acrobat and not marked as “non-printing.”
Suggested Solutions
Open PDF in a Preflight Tool
Use tools such as callas pdfToolbox, Enfocus PitStop, or Adobe Acrobat Pro Preflight to list all existing annotations. Filter by comments (Subtype /Annot) and check their position relative to the TrimBox and BleedBox.
Pay special attention to visible comment types such as text notes, stamps, highlights that could appear in the print.
Remove or Move
If comments are not needed: Delete them completely.
If relevant: Move them outside the page boundary (e.g., into the slug area), but carefully, since comments are generally not allowed in PDF/X files.
Ensure that no unnecessary elements are included in the output. Check the settings in the “Adobe PDF Export” dialog under “General” in the designated area.
